Prestigious Institutes in India for Medical Research
Indian Council of Medical Research(ICMR)– It is the apex body of biomedical research in the country. ICMR’s 26 national institutes address themselves to research on specific health topics like tuberculosis, leprosy, cholera and diarrhoeal diseases, viral diseases including AIDS, malaria, kala-azar , vector control, nutrition, food & drug toxicology, reproduction, immuno-haematology, oncology, medical statistics, etc. Its 6 regional medical research centres address themselves to regional health problems, and also aim to strengthen or generate research capabilities in different geographic areas of the country.
National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences(NIMHANS)– It is a multidisciplinary institute for patient care and academic pursuit in the frontier area of mental health and neurosciences. The priority gradient adopted at the Institute is service, manpower development and research. It is the apex centre for mental health and neuroscience education in the country.
Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research ( JIPMER)-JIPMER is an Institute of National Importance (INI) and a tertiary care referral hospital that is under the direct administrative control of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India with autonomy to run its internal administration.
All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health (AIIH&PH)– It is a pioneering Indian institute for research and training in public health and allied sciences in Kolkata. It was established on 30 December 1932 with assistance from the Rockefeller Foundation.It is also one of the nine institutions in India, which offer Post-Graduate Diploma in Public Health Management.
Haffkine Institute– It is for Training, Research and Testing is located in Parel in Mumbai (Bombay), India. It was established on 10 August 1899 by Dr. Waldemar Mordecai Haffkine, as a bacteriology research centre called the “Plague Research Laboratory”.The Institute now serves as a teaching institution in the field of biomedical sciences and is affiliated to the University of Mumbai for M.Sc (Microbiology, Applied Biology and Organic Chemistry), Ph.D. (Microbiology) and M.D (P.S.M.) degree programs.
National Institute of Virology (NIV) – It is an Indian virology research institute in Pune, and one of the translational science cells part of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It was previously known as ‘Virus Research Center’ and was founded in collaboration with the Rockefeller Foundation. It has been designated as a WHO H5 reference laboratory for SE Asia region. It has many landmark achievements latest being isolating SARS-Cov2 strains in India fifth in the world.
Tata Memorial Centre – The Tata Memorial Hospital is situated in Parel, Mumbai, in India. It is a specialist cancer treatment and research centre, closely associated with the Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC). The Centre is the national comprehensive cancer centre for the prevention, treatment, education and research in cancer and is recognized as one of the leading cancer centres in this part of the world.
